God announces plan to "reboot" planet Earth (Genesis 6:9-22)

Gen. 6:9 - Rightnous in his generation?

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was in his generations a man righteous and wholehearted; Noah walked with God.

"in his generations" The big question here is whether Noah was a good man as judged by his contemporaries (but not if compared to the moral exemplars of later generations), or whether he was a good man if judged by an objective standard for all time? Rashi stated that there was a tension between these two points of view, but did give his own position.

"a man rightenous and wholehearted; Noah walked with God." Rashi emphasizes the idea that Noah walked (past tense) with God, which meant that he had already been living a good and righteous life before his calling.

In Hebrew, Noah was a "אִישׁ צַדִּיק" (Ish Tzadek - Righteous man) who was תָּמִים (Tamim, according to , this could be translated as "up-right, God-fearing, or unblemished in the context of a sacrifice"). Some translations descibe him as "perfect" (KJV) or as "blameless" (NASB, NIV, NRSV, New JPS), but I think a better choice might be "beyond reproach" (the choice made by The Modern Torah Commentary), as it implies that Noah had a good reputation for righteous living but wasn't necessarily "perfect." The JPS Commentary also states that the term tamim is almost always used in the context of ritual sacrifice. (footnote)

Gen. 6:10-13 - A corrupted Earth

And Noah begot three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12וַיַּ֧רְא אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ וְהִנֵּ֣ה נִשְׁחָ֑תָה כִּֽי־הִשְׁחִ֧ית כׇּל־בָּשָׂ֛ר אֶת־דַּרְכּ֖וֹ עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {ס}
And God saw the earth, and it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

And God said to Noah: ‘The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and I will destroy them with the earth.

the corrption of the earth with violence: The ancient Israelites (like their neighbors) believed that divine forces controlled nature, and hence human moral failings (as judged by the divine) could corrupt or pollute the earth, leading to crop failures. What sets this story apart from other stories of its time, was that the offense against the divine came by way human violence against other humans, and not an offense against the gods.

Gen. 6:14-16 - Plans for the Ark

Make an ark of gopher wood; with rooms you will make the ark, and pitch it inside and outside with pitch.

And this is how you will make it: the length of the ark: three hundred cubits, the breadth of it: fifty cubits, and the height of it: thirty cubits.

A you will make a skylight in the ark, and you will finish it to a cubit upward; and you will set the door of the ark in the side of it; you will make it with lower, second, and third stories.

Ark of gopher wood The word for ark in Hebrew is tevah, and is only used in the sense of water vessel in connection with this ark, as well as to describre the pitch-covered basket that the baby was placed in, which in both cases are vessels that are not depicted as having rudders or any other means to control their journey. Gopher wood likely refers to either cedar or cyprus wood.(footnote)

Ark Dimensions and Plan: I grew up in a religious tradition that took a very literal approach to this text, but oddly enough my Sunday school teachers spent very little time explaining how small the ark actually was said to be (at least in modern terms) --- and failed to mention how absurd this story's explanation of the ark would be, if taken literally.

The best explanation I've found of this absurdity comes from this article from the National Council of Science Education: "The Impossible Voyage of Noah's Ark":

Was there room enough on the ark? It contained 450 x 75 x 45 = 1,518,750 cubic feet of space if it was exactly rectangular with no curve on the keel or elsewhere. Part of this was occupied by the quarters for Noah and his family. Room had to be provided for the orderly compartmentalization of plants and seeds. An immense storage area for food, fresh water, and waste was needed. Also, the ark had to have corridors throughout, large enough for the passage of the bulkiest animals to their stalls when boarding and unboarding and at least large enough for the crew to pass into the most remote corners of the vessel. There would finally be a considerable volume lost in wood alone; the decks, larger cages, supporting beams, and so on would occupy a considerable space. . . If we conservatively allow all of these requirements to consume 30 percent of the space, this leaves 1,063,125 cubic feet to be divided among the nearly 4 million animals, resulting in a mere 0.275 cubic foot per individual! No arrangement of cages, however ingenious, no high-density packing of minute invertebrates, could squeeze everyone into this amount of room. . .

This story is obviously myth, sacred yes, but still mythology. It is ok if the reader wants to temporaily suspend disbelief to temporarily get into the fictional story being told, but a reader should not confuse this imaginative effort with believing in these stories from a factual basis. The story was meant to impress ancient readers (for whom the dimensions of the ship would have been grandiose) but is not so impressive today.

Of course, Biblical literalists can avoid these problems by assuming the use of "miraculous" or "magical" powers, much like the famous TARDIS of the Dr. Who series or the charmed wizarding tents of the Harry Potter series of books.

Gen. 6:17-22 - Plans for destruction

And I, I do bring the flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, in which there is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is in the earth shall perish.

But I will establish My covenant with you; and you will come into the ark, you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

And of every living thing of all flesh, you will bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they will be male and female.

Of the fowl after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort will come to you, to keep them alive.

And take with you of all food that is eaten, and gather it to you; and it will be for food for you, and for them.’

And Noah did everything that God commanded him, it was so.

Covenant - This begins discussion of the first major covenant of the Jewish scriptures. Covenants in the Biblical sense were modeled after the covenants of the Ancient Near East, and served as contracts or pacts between two parties, which were put into effect through a ritual process, which is frankly not that far removed from our modern convention of signing contracts.

"Every living thing" - Interestingly enough, Rashi (quoting Genesis Rabbic 31:13) said that this would have included the demons.

The "reboot" plan is put into effect, all die but those in the magic ark (Genesis 7:1-14)

Gen. 7:1-5 - Final Instructions for Noah

And the LORD said to Noah: ‘You and all your house Come into the ark; because I have seen you as righteous before Me in this generation.

Of every clean beast you shall take to you seven and seven, each with his mate; and of the beasts that are not clean two [and two], each with his mate;

also of the fowl of the air, seven and seven, male and female; to keep their seed alive on the face of all the earth.

Because in seven days, I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made, I will blot out from the face of the earth.’

And Noah did everything that the LORD commanded him.

Clean - The reference to clean and unclean beasts is an obvious anarchonism, as the dietary laws of kashrut (kosher) had not yet been revealed in Torah.

Gen. 7:6-14 - Loading the Ark

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was on the earth.

And Noah, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’wives, went with him into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creeps on the ground,

there went two and two to Noah into the ark, male and female, as God commanded Noah.

And in seven days, that the waters of the flood were on the earth.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the springs of the great deep split, and the windows of heaven were opened.

And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

The same day Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons entered with them, into the ark;

they, and every beast of its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth of its kind, and every fowl of its kind, every bird of every sort.

Number of animals - The conflicting discusion about the number of animals (here it says 2 of every kind, clean and unclean, while in 7:2 it says Noah brought on board 7 each of clean animals, but only 2 each of unclean animals) which were brought into the ark was possibly the result of the compilers of the text of Bereshit working from more than one source.(footnote)

Gen. 7:15-24 - Divine slaughter by Great Flood

And they went to Noah, into the ark, two and two of all flesh containing the breath of life.

And they went in male and female of all flesh, as God commanded him; and the LORD shut him in.

And the flood was forty days on the earth; and the waters increased, and lifted up the ark, and it was raised above the earth.

And the waters prevailed, and increased greatly on the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were covered.

Fifteen cubits upward the waters prevailed; and the mountains were covered.

And all flesh that moved upon the earth perished, fowl, and cattle, and beast, and every swarming thing that swarmed upon the earth, and every man;

all who had the breath of the spirit of life in their nostrils, everything that was on the dry land, died. And He blotted out every living thing which was upon the face of the ground, man, and cattle, and creeping things, and fowl of the heaven; and they were blotted out from the earth; and only Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark.

And the waters prevailed on the earth a hundred fifty days.

Divine slaughter - Verbiage like "blotted out" is meant to convey the deep horror of this story. The sense of this reading, is that Noah and his family survived by the closest of margins, truly a Sheg melanu kol tov kind of moment.

"15 cubits upward the waters prevailed; and the mountains were covered" - This odd bit of specificity makes no sense. 15 cubits would be around 25 feet. Obviously a 25 foot increase in sea levels would be catastrophic to human life on earth but it wouldn't cover the mountains. That said, an increase of 25 feet in the water levels of the great rivers of ancient Mesopotamia would be a truly catastrophic flood. Issac Asimov (yes, that Issac Asimov) has suggested in his commentary that the flood story might have derived its origins from a large and catastrophic localized flood, which might account for this specific statement.(footnote)

Noah's family and animals survive by way of "magic ark" (8:1-12)

Gen. 8:1-12 - Story of the Survivors

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters receded;

also the springs of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.

And the waters receded from off the earth; and after the end of a hundred and fifty days the waters decreased.

And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.

And the waters receded continually until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were visible.

After forty days, Noah opened the window of the ark he had made.

And he sent out a raven, and it went out here and there, until the waters were dried up off the earth.

And he sent out a dove, to see if the waters had receded from off the face of the ground.

But the dove found no place to rest the sole of its foot, and it returned to him in the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth; and he put out his hand,and took it, and brought it to

him into the ark.

And he waited still another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark.

And the dove came to him the evening; and in its mouth it had a freshly plucked olive-leaf; so Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth.

And he waited still another seven days; and sent out the dove; and it did not return to him any more.

"God Remembered" - Several commentaries state that it is not that God God "forgot" about the ark dwellers, but rather that he shifted his attention back to them, but the text does not make this distinction.(footnote)

Mountains of Ararat - Contrary to popular tradition, there was no Mount Ararat, rather the reference to the "mountains of Ararat" likely refers to a mountainous region in either Eastern Turkey or Armenia. (footnote)

God institutes covernant with Noah and his family (Genesis 8:13-9:19)

Gen. 8:13-19 - Disembarkation from the Ark

And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked and the face of the ground was dry.

14 וּבַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י בְּשִׁבְעָ֧ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים י֖וֹם לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ יָבְשָׁ֖ה הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {ס}
And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.

And God spoke to Noah, saying:

’Go out of the ark, you, and your wife, and your sons, and your sons’ wives with you.

Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh, fowl, and cattle, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth; that they may swarm in the earth, and be fruitful, and

multiply upon the earth.’

And Noah went out, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him;

every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, whatever moves upon the earth, after their families; went out of the ark.

Be fruitful and multiply upon the earth - Interestingly, this divine imperative is also the evolutionary imperative --- to multiply one's own kind (be it species, nation or family).

Gen. 8:20-22 - Noah offers animal sacrifices

And Noah built an altar to the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt-offerings on the altar.

And the LORD smelled the sweet odor; and the LORD said in His heart: ‘I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never

again kill every thing living, as I have done.

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.’

Does God like the smell of smoked meat? - Taken literally, the answer is yes. As the text continues we will start seeing less and less of these anthromorphic ways of describing God, but right now, God is still depicted with very human-like qualities.

Are human good or bad? - The text is depicting a very different kind of understanding than we saw just a few chapters ago. Humans are no longer "very good" but rather have their mind set on ëvil from their youth. And yet, God and the compilers of the text of Genesis recognize that some humans are righteous.

Gen. 9:1-19 - Noah and family enters into covenant with God

And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.

And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, and upon everything the creeps on the ground, and upon all the fishes of the sea: into

your hand are they delivered.

Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; as the green herbs I have given you all.

But flesh with its soul, its blood, you shall not eat.

But your blood of your soul I shall require; at the hand of every beast will I require it; and at the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the soul of man.

Whoever Sheds man’s blood, by man will his blood be shed; for in the image of God He made man.

7 ְאַתֶּ֖ם פְּר֣וּ וּרְב֑וּ שִׁרְצ֥וּ בָאָ֖רֶץ וּרְבוּ־בָֽהּ׃ {ס}
And you, be fruitful, and multiply; swarm on the earth, and multiply in it.’

And God spoke to Noah, and to his sons with him, saying:

’As for Me, I establish My covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

and with every living creature that is with you, the fowl, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that go out of the ark, even every beast of the earth.

And I will establish My covenant with you; no more will all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; and no more will there be a flood to destroy the earth.’

And God said: ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all the generations of the world:

I have set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.

In the future, when I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow is seen in the cloud,

I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters will no more flood to destroy all flesh.

And the bow will be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’

17 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־נֹ֑חַ זֹ֤את אֽוֹת־הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֲקִמֹ֔תִי בֵּינִ֕י וּבֵ֥ין כׇּל־בָּשָׂ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}
And God said to Noah: ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.’

And the sons of Noah, that went out of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan.

These three were the sons of Noah, and from these, the whole earth spread out.

This passage provides the foundation of the Noahide laws, which the Jewish tradition teaches are binding on all humankind (unlike the mitzvot of Torah which are only binding up on Jews). The laws as stated in the text are very simple (eat anything you want of plants or animals but don't eat blood, don't kill people, and be fruit and multiply) but Rabbinic tradition has expanded these principles into 7 laws .

A mystery... what really happened in Noah's tent? (Genesis 9:20-27)

Gen. 9:20-27 - Who did what to whom?

And Noah, a man of the soil planted a vineyard.

And he drank of the wine, and was drunk; and he was uncovered within his tent.

And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.

And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they did not see their

father’s nakedness.

And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had done to him.

And he said: Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he will be to his brothers.

And he said: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; And let Canaan be their servant.

God enlarge Japheth, and he will dwell in the tents of Shem; And let Canaan be their servant.

Noah's Post-flood career in winemaking and its aftermath - Commentators have long argued about what this story is really about --- is it a cautionary tale about embarassing things that can happen when elderly people get drunk? Is it a warning about not taking advantage of people when they are drunk or otherwise incapacitated? Or is the text speaking euphemistically about something more terrible than Ham seeing his father drunk and naked--- did Ham assault his father, or did he have forbidden relations with his father's wife? All of these are possibilities.

While there is much we don't know about this text, I think it might be best understood as a kind of explanatory story, to justify some kind of prejudice that was held at the time of the writing of this book. This seems especially to be possible, given the replacement of Ham with Canaan in Noah's curse.

The Extended Family Tree of Noah (Gen. 9:28-10:32)

Gen. 9:28-10:1 - Introduction

And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

29 וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙* כׇּל־יְמֵי־נֹ֔חַ תְּשַׁ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּמֹֽת׃ {פ}
And all the days of Noah were nine hundred fifty years; and he died.

Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and sons were born to them after the flood.

Family Trees and the supposed origins of nations - The entire book of Bereshit focuses on answering nagging questions, so it is not surprising that these kinds of simplified family trees are shared to explain where the different are derived. But these legends shouldn't be treated as fact, particularly since non-factual concerns have tilted the story. One good example of this is the listing of Canaan as a Hamitic nation, when in fact the Canaanites spoke a Semitic language. Yet, to the compilers of the text, the Canaanites were often seen as being Hamitic due to their times of being conquered and controlled by the Egyptians.

Also it is important to remember that in the ancient world, kinship was often meant cover all kinds of connection beyond just blood ties.(footnote)

Japheth and his descendants (Gen. 10:2-5)

The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

And the sons of Javan: Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

Of these were the isles of the nations divided in their lands, after their his tongues, after their families, in their nations.

Ashkenaz According to the JPS Torah commentary, the Ashkenzi were the same people as the Ashkuzai or Ishkuza (of Assyrian tradition) or the Scythians (of Greek tradition) who were known as a nomadic Indo-European people who lived in the area between the Black and Caspain seas. (footnote)

The term "Ashkenazi" later came to refer to a community of Jews that coallesed in the Holy Roman Empire the end of the first Millenium CE, but who later spread out eastward.

Ham and his descendants (Gen. 10:6-20)

And the sons of Ham: Cush, and Mizraim, and Put, and Canaan.

And the sons of Cush: Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan.

And Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; of whom it is said: ‘Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD.’

And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

Out of that land came Asshur, and built Nineveh, and Rehoboth-ir, and Calah,

and Resen between Nineveh and Calah-which is also called the great city.

And Mizraim begot Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

14 וְֽאֶת־פַּתְרֻסִ֞ים וְאֶת־כַּסְלֻחִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָצְא֥וּ מִשָּׁ֛ם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וְאֶת־כַּפְתֹּרִֽים׃ {ס}
and Pathrusim, and Casluhim - from where the Philistines came - and Caphtorim.

15. And Canaan begot Zidon his firstborn, and Heth;

and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite;

and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite;

and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite; and afterward were the families of the Canaanite spread abroad.

And the border of the Canaanite was from Zidon, as you go toward Gerar, to Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, to Lasha.

20 אֵ֣לֶּה בְנֵי־חָ֔ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לִלְשֹֽׁנֹתָ֑ם בְּאַרְצֹתָ֖ם בְּגוֹיֵהֶֽם׃ {ס}
These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, in their nations.

"Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord" - We do not know who Nimrod was, but it does sound like he was a dynamic figure of the ancient world, who inspired more stories came to later be told.

Shem and his descendants (Gen. 10:21-32)

And to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were also born to him.

The sons of Shem: Elam, and Asshur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram.

And the sons of Aram: Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.

And Arpachshad begot Shelah; and Shelah begot Eber.

And to Eber were born two sons; the name of the one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.

And Joktan begot Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah;

and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah;

and Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba;

and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan.

And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go toward Sephar, to the mountain of the east.

These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

32 אֵ֣לֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹ֧ת בְּנֵי־נֹ֛חַ לְתוֹלְדֹתָ֖ם בְּגוֹיֵהֶ֑ם וּמֵאֵ֜לֶּה נִפְרְד֧וּ הַגּוֹיִ֛ם בָּאָ֖רֶץ אַחַ֥ר הַמַּבּֽוּל׃ {פ}
These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations; and of these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

Babel... and the mythological origins of language (Gen. 11:1-9)

Gen. 11:1-9 - The story of Babel

It happened that the whole earth was of one language and the same words.

And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a valley in the land of Shinar; and they dwelled there.

And they said one to another: ‘Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and clay for mortar.

And they said: ‘Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; so we won’t be scattered across the face of the earth.’

And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

And the LORD said: ‘They are one people, and they have one language; and this is what they begin to do; and now nothing will be withheld from them, which they plan to do.

Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.’

So the LORD scattered them abroad from there across the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.

9 ַל־כֵּ֞ן קָרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ בָּבֶ֔ל כִּי־שָׁ֛ם בָּלַ֥ל יְהֹוָ֖ה שְׂפַ֣ת כׇּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וּמִשָּׁם֙ הֱפִיצָ֣ם יְהֹוָ֔ה עַל־פְּנֵ֖י כׇּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}
So, the name of it was called Babel; because the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them across the face of the whole earth.

Origin of languages - We have here another explanatory story of legend, to explain something that puzzled ancient peoples --- why is it that different people speak different languages?

"Let us make a name for ourselves" - This story arguably functions as a critique of human hubris, but also a critique of empires and civilizations, since the kind of structure described here would likely require a hierarchical society. (footnote)

"And the Lord came down..." We see a reversal of sorts. Humankind is trying to reach up to God, but God(s) comes down to earth. (footnote)

"Come, let us go down..." - We are still seeing the use of the first person plural to refer to God (as seen previously in the Creation story). Also we are not told how exactly God (or God's entourage?) confused the speech of humankind.

The focus of the epic] narrows to one line of the family tree (Gen. 11:10-32)

Gen. 11:10-32 - A line from Shem

These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arpachshad two years after the flood.

11 וַֽיְחִי־שֵׁ֗ם אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־אַרְפַּכְשָׁ֔ד חֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Shem lived after he begot Arpachshad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Arpachshad lived thirty five years, and begot Shelah.

13 וַֽיְחִ֣י אַרְפַּכְשַׁ֗ד אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־שֶׁ֔לַח שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Arpachshad lived after he begot Shelah four hundred three years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

15 וַֽיְחִי־שֶׁ֗לַח אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־עֵ֔בֶר שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Shelah lived after he begot Eber four hundred three years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Eber lived thirty four years, and begot Peleg.

17 וַֽיְחִי־עֵ֗בֶר אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־פֶּ֔לֶג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Eber lived after he begot Peleg four hundred thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

19 וַֽיְחִי־פֶ֗לֶג אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־רְע֔וּ תֵּ֥שַׁע שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Peleg lived after he begot Reu two hundred nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Reu lived thirty two years, and begot Serug.

21 וַיְחִ֣י רְע֗וּ אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־שְׂר֔וּג שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Reu lived after he begot Serug two hundred seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.

23 וַיְחִ֣י שְׂר֗וּג אַחֲרֵ֛י הוֹלִיד֥וֹ אֶת־נָח֖וֹר מָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Serug lived after he begot Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Nahor lived twenty nine years, and begot Terah.

25 וַיְחִ֣י נָח֗וֹר אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־תֶּ֔רַח תְּשַֽׁע־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה וּמְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ {ס}
And Nahor lived after he begot Terah one hundred nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

And Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

And Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they took them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go to the land of Canaan;

and they came to Haran, and dwelled there.

32 וַיִּהְי֣וּ יְמֵי־תֶ֔רַח חָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֥מׇת תֶּ֖רַח בְּחָרָֽן׃ {פ}
And the days of Terah were two hundred five years; and Terah died in Haran.

Ur of the Chaldees - This city is believed to be located in modern Iraq, but some believe it could have located elsewhere.

Haran - Haran was likely located in modern-day Turkey, which makes it sound like Terah and his kinfolks were aiming to go to Canaan but decided to stop and stay in Haran instead.

Sarai's barreness - The theme of barreness will come back, again and again, throughout the Jewish scriptures.
